The Unexpected Mrs Pollifax Dorothy Gilman 9780449208281 Books Reviews
I first read the Mrs Pollifax books when I was a little girl and I keep coming back to read the books again and again. Sure, the plots are silly and there's some political incorrectness that will get some people's knickers in a twist, but it's Emily who I want to revisit. Her innocence and her sense of wonder, her deep wisdom of taking people as they come and finding something worthwhile in anyone willing to meet her halfway, her pure joy in life...those are the take aways that keep bringing me back. If I could choose one person out of all the literary world to have as a friend, it would be Mrs Pollifax.
The Mrs. Pollifax mysteries were what I read as an adolescent that hooked me into the genre. More than a few decades later (!), I thought it would be fun to read through them once more. Although I did enjoy reading Mrs. Pollifax again, I did not enjoy her enough to pay $42 to read through the rest of the first seven books. She is funny and resourceful but different from what I prefer to read now.
I found an old Reader's Digest condensed book on the bookshelf at a vacation cabin. One story in it was Mrs. Polifax and the Golden Triangle. I fell in love with Mrs. Pollifax and decided to get the original full-length book. Imagine my delight when I discovered there are several books in a series!!! This one was just as fun as the RD condensed one I read on vacation. I intend to read the rest of them this summer. Too fun and too funny for a grandma going through the same empty nest thing. No, it's not great literature but it is good, clean fun.
I love this story. I first read it years ago with Reader's Digest Condensed Books. I fell in love with the character and have probably read almost all the sequels. It is engaging, and interesting and being older now, I like reading about a heroine who is not 25, lithe, trim and tan! It is an easy read, good for the beach or sitting on the sofa on a rainy Saturday.
I loved this book. Mrs. Pollifax is a very charming Senior Citizen who grows Flowers. Her life is worthy but dull. The Doctor asks her if there isn't anything she wanted to do when she was younger. Why, yes there was...a Spy. The Doctor laughs and she goes out but after some thought decides why not? The only problem is how do you become one?
Although this book sounds like its going to be all humor it actually has a lot of action in it. I got swept up in her Adventure and was at the end before I knew it. A definite page turner.
You will meet three recurring characters. Two are her contacts in the CIA and how she finally becomes an Agent...well read the book!
I highly recommend it.
This book and series is great. Bought it on a whim one long night, promptly forgot about said purchase and a few months later, slightly bored, restless, and dissatisfied, I begrudgingly "cracked" it open as it were on my . And I am so glad I did. Highly highly original series, quite charming, realistically portrayed (that movie where the grandpa develops a heroin addiction comes to mind when discussing the viability of a grandmother wanting to join the CIA for any doubters, which is the point I mean, why not? You got nothing to lose and nothing really to live for at retirement age) and is quite lovely really. At this point I admit I am well on my way to buying and reading the entire series but this first one thus far is my favorite because it's the longest and most intricate. Also the most amusing. Please buy and read it, it's the best thing you can do for yourself. It's like a reminder of the zest for life which sometimes (like salt for iodine) we need to add to our lives because we forgot how important it is.
