Many thanks to the author, who provided a free copy of The Immortal’s Redemption in exchange for an honest review.

I’m reminded a bit of Highlander, just no one is losing their heads - yet! Dylan is an immortal assassin for a group of Druids. Three hundred years previous the goddess Danu appeared to him in a vision and showed him a woman, telling him that his mission was to find her. If he didn’t find her, or didn’t find her in time, the goddess Cailleach would break free of her imprisonment in another dimension. This woman had to be killed by Samhain (Halloween) to prevent this. Danu just didn’t mention that she wouldn’t be born for three hundred years, cause you know, divine creatures are jerks like that sometimes. Fast forward in time and it’s becoming pretty obvious that Cailleach is shaking her chains pretty hard (she’s a divine hag, and a weather deity, so the weather’s getting whacky) Danu appears to Dylan again, who’s not quite so thrilled to see her this time. She informs him that he must find the truth within this woman or choose to sacrifice. Whether she means the girl or himself she doesn’t say. As time has gone by, Dylan has become obsessed with this woman that he is tasked to find. Does he love her..or, would he love to kill her and be done with this job? Either way, the time has come.

We flip over to Kennedy Jefferson, who is a nurse, and who has most recently been experiencing blackouts where she loses a hour or two. It’s stepped up over the length of time, and she has now woken up inside the hospital where she works, standing in a hallway, wondering how the hell she got there. She’s missing a whole weekend now. It’s not your standard black out, she tries to explain to her best friend Ethan, it’s like her personality, her mind, is just pushed aside by something more powerful than she is. Dylan appears, in the guise of a cop. First he sniffs out that this is the woman and that her “best friend” is more than he appears to be. The game is on when Cailleach makes an appearance, banishing any doubt Dylan may have had about Kennedy’s identity. One destroyed house later Dylan is on a plane back to Ireland, with Kennedy in tow.

Despite the verbal smackdown he gets from his boss for bringing Kennedy to “the nest”, Dylan feels that he has done the right thing. He makes a deal with Cailleach (who is still randomly taking over Kennedy’s body) that he will be her consort if she will withdraw and leave Kennedy’s brain be when they are alone together. After all, he reasons with the goddess, if Kennedy is going to be your host, he would rather like to know that she is at least willing to be with him. He’s hoping that if they spend a good bit of time together that he will be able to figure out this mysterious truth and save the whole shebang before Samhain. Cailleach agrees, but you just know she’s got something up her sleeve. Several somethings, it turns out.

Cailleach is not to be underestimated, and manages to take over while Kennedy is not with Dylan. She starts a sword fight causing one of the brotherhood, Gareth, Dylan’s bestie, to be injured because he doesn’t want to hurt Kennedy by fighting Cailleach off. Kennedy feels absolutely horrible about what she’s done to Gareth, who was nothing but kind to her. She’s allowed to use her medical training to help stabilize him along with the other Druids using their magic to help the medicine along. At the first chance Cailleach tries to force Kennedy to kill Gareth by giving him too much morphine. She manages to resist long enough for Dylan to realize what is going on, and he does the only thing he can think of to get her to come back to herself - he kisses her.

As time counts down to Samhain Dylan and Kennedy become more and more entangled in each other. Dylan is no closer to his goal of finding this “truth” or what he’s supposed to do with it. Eventually Dylan’s boss, the Head Assassin, commands that the archives be searched to find another way to evict Cailleach from Kennedy without killing her. Can they find the answer in time? Or will Cailleach bash her way into Kennedy’s brain permanently, killing the tenuous friendship and newly sparked attraction between Kennedy and Dylan? Dylan is torn between love and duty, the lady or the tiger.

Cailleach has secrets up her sleeve that go back generations, and she is not to be trifled with.

This was a great, fast paced, interesting story! I believe my favorite scene was when Kennedy was resisting Cailleach's control, trying not to overdose Gareth. I love the strength she showed there. I’m curious about Gareth and Rowan’s backstories now. Another great read from Kelli Ireland.

The Immortal’s Redemption
Kelli Ireland
Harlequin Nocturne, Oct 1 2015, $5.75
ISBN 9780263917994

In 1718 Scotland, as he waits in ambush for the fat genocidal Laird of Clan McKay, Dylan knows he lacks a key trait that successful assassins require patience. Still he somewhat controls his anxiety to kill the abomination for mass murdering of Druids. However, before he can complete his task, Danu the Mother of All visits him with a vision of a beautiful woman who along with mankind will need his help three centuries in the future when a Shadow Realm god escapes bondage.

Three hundred years later Danu returns; she informs Dylan the time is now for him to find the woman who will lead him to the truth or his death as he must kill this Kennedy Jefferson to prevent the end of the world. When she awakens in a hospital, Kennedy has amnesia and fears she suffers from mental illness apparently common in her family. Only her best friend Ethan keeps her stable. When Dylan and Kennedy meet, they are attracted to each other, but his mission must come before his heart.

The Immortal’s Redemption is an entertaining romantic urban fantasy with an intriguing dilemma faced by the lead male. The support cast and Dylan are fully developed, but Kennedy acts irresponsibly foolish and feels for the most part incomplete as perhaps more insight on her memory loss and sudden moments of recall would have helped readers to understand her better.

Harriet Klausner
Upon starting the first Harlequin Nocturne release from Kelli Ireland, I had no idea the story would be so fascinating. A group of druids use a clever mix of modern and ancient thinking to solve problems, and I was often fascinated by their choices. While smartphones may be used by these men who possess supernatural abilities, they also have a library containing vital information that has been recorded for a vast number of years and the use of magic is frequently a key factor. Kelli Ireland has written an imaginative paranormal story with distinctive characters and a unique premise.

In the early 1700’s, a young Irish druid received a forewarning from a powerful being about a time to come where a certain woman will show him the truth. If Dylan O’Shea does not find this female and learn crucial information, mankind and even druids like him will perish because of the actions of a banished goddess. He immediately begins his mission, but it takes several hundred years for him to locate Kennedy Jefferson. Right before Samhain, he is finally told she lives in Atlanta, Georgia and he wastes no time in going to her. Kennedy is unwittingly being used as a host, and it is his duty to stop a possible catastrophic event before it happens. Since he is an assassin, he knows exactly what must be done.

For the past few days, Kennedy has no recollection of her activities. She thinks something is not right, but does not know how to discover the cause of her trouble. When Dylan appears in her life, she is forced to face things she never imagined could be real. Being around the woman that the druid has tracked for so long has emotions he should not be feeling coming to the surface. But Dylan understands there must not be any hesitation in carrying out his sworn responsibility.

There are certainly lots of attention-grabbing characters in THE IMMORTAL’S REDEMPTION. Many of the men who live in a secluded castle in Ireland and follow ancient practices were a joy to meet. Dylan is often demanding, but can be charming and has a sense of humor at times. His second in command, Gareth, has a delightful personality, and I really hope he and several of the other men get the opportunity to tell their own stories along with a good friend of Kennedy’s who also has his own appeal. The two main characters definitely had plenty going against them when it came to having a relationship. Dylan is a feared druid assassin with much power, and he takes his duty very seriously. So when he goes to see Kennedy who is critical to saving countless people, he thought the assignment could be successfully carried out like all those previously. But when he senses a connection to her like no one before, he is pulled in two directions.

When Kennedy ends up involved with Dylan and not by choice, she is confused at first plus frightened. But she soon feels a pull to the man who could either be her savior or her executioner. Being under the influence of a scheming goddess caused her behavior to sometimes be unpredictable, and these moments were nerve-racking as I waited to see what she would eventually do. While much of the story is serious, there are quite a few amusing scenes with witty banter and hilarious comments. The sexual relationship of Dylan and Kennedy is intensely passionate, particularly when a bond starts to form between them. With inventive paranormal aspects and engaging characters, Kelli Ireland makes THE IMMORTAL’S REDEMPTION very entertaining
