At the beginning of Family Pieces, Karsen Woods is very excited and hopeful about her future. With a loving family, a loyal best friend and a handsome older boyfriend James, Karsen seems to have it all until one after another, things in Karsen's life begin to fall apart: from the death of her mother to the betrayal of James, to a family puzzle she is determined to solve. Addison Reynolds, is a successful and beautiful magazine publisher in New York City who seems to have it all but she holds a secret that keeps her at arm's length from almost everyone in her life. Living two separate lives, the two women have a connection that unbeknownst to them will enable one another to fully come to terms with the past and embrace the future.

I really enjoyed this book. Both of the main characters went through such an emotional journey that I choked up at times. There were moments when I really disliked Addison and wanted to scream 'Get over it!" but I always rooted for her to deal with her issues and find happiness. And Karsen was extremely likeable and had surprising strength for a young woman that I admired. The secondary characters were very well fleshed out and my favorite was little Adelaide. I really enjoy well written scenes involving children and the author nailed it. The side story between Karsen's brother Brad and her best friend Hannah was a nice addition to the story. While Addison's love story, including the hero, was a bit too good to be true for my taste, true romance readers will eat it up. Finally, I enjoyed the subtle secondary storylines and give kudos to the author for not leaving any of them open-ended

Family Pieces Misa Rush 9780615391588 Books Reviews

I was tempted to give it only 3-stars, but...
It was an entertaining read. It was not what I thought it would be when I bought it, but it turned out okay and fun. I think it was a little contrived, the characters always seemed to have enough money to fly all over the country, yet the reader is made to believe she/they had little or no money.

Still, though it was an enjoyable read, I had expected more of a story about family life and loves. I think the writer should be given some credit for keeping me reading even while I wondered about what I'd gotten myself into. As I didn't throw it onto the junk heap, perhaps the writer is good enough for a second chance.

Karsen's mother just died in an accident, she broke up with her cheating boyfriend and she's pregnant. She has a necklace with a puzzle piece charm that fits in with her mom's necklace, and her brother and father have puzzle pieced, but there is a missing piece. Addison is a high strung magazine publisher who can't let anyone get close to her. And she's adopted. You don't need to be a detective to figure out the story.
Neither Karsen nor Addison is a particular engaging character, though I did like Addison's storyline better. The predictable plot wasn't that engaging, the characters were mundane. The writing was average, a lot of telling vs showing. This wasn't a bad book, it just wasn't very good. I didn't care much about Karsen's plight and while the necklace puzzle piece idea was a good device, the writer failed to use tension or intrigue to keep the pace of the novel or make me care too much.
THAT'S A VERY HARD THING TO HAVE DONE TO ME. I DON'T MEAN THAT I DON'T HAVE FEELINGS. ON THE CONTRARY, I'M A VERY EMOTIONAL PERSON IN MY LIFE. I'M JUST NOT USED TO A BOOK MAKING ME FEEL FOR EACH AND EVERY CHARACTER, EVEN ONES THAT ARE SECONDARY TO THE STORYLINE.
SOME OF THE PLOT WAS A BIT PREDICTABLE, BUT THERE WAS A MAJOR ARC IN THE STORY. NO SPOILERS HERE, BUT IT WAS UNFORESEEABLE, DRAMATIC, AND SET THE TONE FOR THE 1/4 END OF THE BOOK. TRULY A "LEFT WING" HOOK THAT MADE ME LITERALLY SPEED UP MY READING. I READ 4/5 BOOKS A WEEK, AND IT CAUGHT ME OFF GUARD. A TRUE TESTAMENT TO THE AUTHOR!
THE EDITING OF THE BOOK WAS SUPERB, WITH JUST TINY "TYPO" OF A SINGLE WORD. THE BOOK FLOWED AT A WONDERFUL PACE AND LEFT NO "LOOSE" ENDS UPON COMPLETION.
ALL IN ALL A VERY SATISFYING READ. I WILL BE WATCHING THIS AUTHOR I BELIEVE, FOR MANY YEARS TO COME...GLADLY. ENJOY! I DID. -D
I enjoyed this book at first. It seemed reasonably well-written and I love the whole puzzle piece charm for family members thing. However as the story went on, it frustrated me more and I started skimming like crazy to make it to the end.

There was an improper "you're" (should have been "your") and "fair" was written when it should have been "fare" and "cubical" when it should have been "cubicle." It was like whoever did the editing just stopped caring after about fifty percent, or maybe I just noticed mistakes more as I became more annoyed with the story.

**Spoiler warning**
The characters' actions became really unrealistic. Karsen knew there seemed to be a missing charm, she tracks down the jeweler because she believes it's a possibility, yet when he calls to tell her that he knows he made four charms rather than three, she thinks "oh he must be confused." Really? He confirms what you've been looking for for the last five chapters and you think he must be confused?

Brad withdraws from a reality competition that would make his career because his sister gets pregnant? I just don't buy that.

***End of spoilers***

The ending wrapped up a little too neatly but it was obvious where everything was heading so I didn't mind that too much, but it was kind of laughable all the same, especially when Karsen says she's going to "stand on her own two feet" when really, she's just going to be completely taken care of by a DIFFERENT person. Also, all of the characters (except maybe Hanna) talked the exact same way - way too formally. I get it, they're educated, but would a college student in her twenties really talk like that all the time?

This type of story I thought was much better done in Emily Giffin's "Where We Belong." The characters are so much more believable.
