Quickbane Episode One The Vale Chronicles Book 1 eBook Chelsea Starling Yu Cheng Hong

I found this book on Facebook, and the cover caught my eye. So did the price. (It was free for kindle.)

Pros:
The story world is fairly interesting. There's some fairly standard fantasy stuff, but it's combined in some interesting ways.

The mentor character (Aggie) is appropriately mysterious, but she's a cranky old crone too, which makes for some fun moments and keeps her from hitting some stereotypes.

Cons:
The story kinda meanders around a lot. Nothing really happens in the book, and it feels a lot like setup for book two. I haven't read book 2, but I'm getting the feeling the pacing would be better if books one and two in the series were combined into one novel and trimmed a little.
Similar thing for the character of Jesobel. She spends a lot of time whining and avoiding work, then she gets her stuff together... then does something stupid... and the book ends. We get the character development and the setup here, but not the payoff.

Basicly, we have my two biggest pet peaves in fantasy here:
1. One story with an act in each book, instead of each book having a complete story in and of itself that ties into a larger story arc across the series.
Listen, people. Just because Tolkien's publisher told him it was impossible for his story to be printed in one book, and they had to split it up... that's no reason for you to write fantasy that way.

2. The untrained hero.
Why, oh why must every fantasy hero (the only person who can save the world) be completely untrained?
To be fair, Quickbane both does, and doesn't fall into this trap. If Jeosobel would pay the slightest bit of training, she'd be trained for the job...

I'm not sure if I'm going to read the next book or not. The world and characters were fun, and it kept me reading (at no time did I have to force myself to finish), I really don't like the whole, one story across multiple books thing. If I do read more, I'll wait until the entire series is finished, and read it all at once.

So, overall, three stars.

Quickbane Episode One The Vale Chronicles Book 1 eBook Chelsea Starling Yu Cheng Hong Reviews

Enchanting and imaginative - I wanted to lose myself in the world of Quickbane and never come back!! It was extremely well written, descriptive, and I fell in love with the characters! A fabulous read and I can't wait to read more from this author!
My daughter loves this book and can't wait for the next in the series. Nice to see her glued to something other than her phone!
Quickbane had me sneaking away from the festivities at our summer vacation to read just a little bit more. The in depth character development had me emotionally tied to this book for a refreshing escape. This author's imagination is wildly talented and I'm looking forward to her next book release!
If you are looking for a page-turner that will suck you into a land of enchanting entertainment, look no further! Quickbane is full of wonderfully imaginative characters and creatures, so vividly described, I was instantly transported to their magical, mystical world. I SO can't wait for the next book... the ending was a complete surprise and left me wanting more!!
Starling has created a fantastic world full of rich characters and wonderful imagery. Young Adult fantasy readers will love this book!
I could not put this beautiful story down!! I was sucked into the world of Jessa and loved her instantaneously! She's a strong character and the story is enchanting, I didn't want it to end! Chelsea is so gifted with the world she gives her readers in this very addicting story!! Bravo!
Quickbane Part One is a short book packed with rich lore and some great foreshadowing. It is a story of courage, love and inner strength.

Our main character Jesobel, the future Royal Starkeeper of Pyxis and as she finds out she is also the Heart of Azimuth as well. She is not only a future leader but now she has the pressure of leading her people back to their lost homeland. It’s a dangerous goal and one that Jesobel struggles to find the will to do. Her magic studies are difficult for her and it isn’t until it’s too late to turn back from her fate that shes truly grows to accept what she has to do. I love her attitude even when it gets her in trouble. She’s a wild girl, who prefers to ride her horse, run barefoot, and shoot her bow…and she is hesitant to part with that side of herself in favor of the girl her people need her to be. I can see how Jesobel is going to grow and it makes me excited to see what she is capable of. There is a touch of romance but it is relevant to the story and is incredibly sweet.

Quickbane Part One is a quick read, but that doesn’t stop it from pulling you in and immersing you in the story. Chelsea manages to pack plenty of interesting lore and a new magic system into the story without loading it down and making it feel sluggish. In fact the farther you go into the story the quicker the story seems to flow (or maybe I was just reading it faster because I couldn’t put it down). And that ending! I can’t wait for Part Two to come out, because I NEED to know what is going to happen to Jesobel.

This is perfect for fantasy lovers who don’t want to wade through 600 pages of world-building. Sterling manages all of that and still leaves you thirsty for more in less than 200. Not to mention a great main character and some awesome foreshadowing involving a rather nefarious character.
